Virtual Doctors Charity

Virtual Doctors Charity

Using the internet to help save lives in rural Africa. What is a Virtual Doctor? Using mobile broadband networks, we connect African clinic staff in rural areas with doctors and specialists all over the world to assist with the diagnosis and treatment of patients. All medical personnel donate their time for free to offer help to some of the world’s poorest communities. Why are they needed? Patients in Africa, many with young children, can travel long distances to reach clinics sometimes on foot or by bicycle. These health centres are often poorly staffed or over-stretched, too often meaning patients have to be referred to distant hospitals. In Zambia for example, a country of 13 million people, there are only 1000 registered doctors with very few in rural areas. Support and advice from our volunteers enables health staff to treat more patients locally and before their condition becomes critical. Where do we operate? We currently offer telemedicine support in Zambia, in sub-Saharan Africa. Sadly, one in twelve children in Zambia will not reach the age of five, and 12.5% of the adult population are HIV positive (UNICEF 2011) so the need here for medical advice is particularly acute.

Fight For The Future

Fight For The Future

Fight for the Future organizes people to fight for their rights and interests, because technology is too central to our basic freedom for its rules to be written by lobbyists and monopolies. Mission Fight for the Future is dedicated to protecting and expanding the Internet's transformative power in our lives by creating civic campaigns that are engaging for millions of people. Alongside internet users everywhere we beat back attempts to limit our basic rights and freedoms, and empower people to demand technology (and policy) that serves their interests. Description It's usually pretty clear where the public's interest lies. Our goal is to make this even clearer--so clear that nobody can subvert it. FFTF is a new organization, its team hailing from the Participatory Culture Foundation, the Participatory Politics Foundation, the Free Software Foundation, A New Way Forward, and Downhill Battle. General Information It's usually pretty clear where peoples’ interests lie in tech. People love huge open libraries of music, books and video. They don't like censorship and legal landmines that get you sued for making amazing things. They’re happy to pay for good stuff, but hate being coerced to pay for mediocrity. And people are right to want all these things, even though governments and businesses with their own interests try to paint this new cultural freedom as dangerous, or destructive. Our goal is to make the public’s interest vividly clear, so clear that not even the most powerful lobbyists and smartest monopolies can subvert it*. To do it, we need your help. If you have ideas, tell us. If you care about this stuff too, follow us in whatever way’s best for you (email's best for us). We’ll be gentle on your inboxes, and we’ll try our best to only send things that are awesome. When we do, share it, hard. Popularity and passion make good ideas dangerous. FFTF is a new organization, its team hailing from the Participatory Culture Foundation, the Free Software Foundation, A New Way Forward, and Downhill Battle. We're friends with EFF, Public Knowledge, FSF, Creative Commons, Demand Progress, Mozilla, Question Copyright and many more. We care passionately about winning, and we have nothing to lose. Plus we're hiring.
